Data sources, datasets, security groups, and users

The associations between data sources, datasets, security groups, and users determines:

  • who can see what data

  • which dataset a piece of data belongs to

Relations between data sources, datasets, security groups, and users

In this example:

  • Data source 1 belongs to dataset A

  • Data source 2 belongs to dataset B

  • There is no data source for dataset C

  • Data source 3 belongs to dataset D

  • Members of security group S can see the data from data source 1 only

  • Members of security group U can see the data from data source 3 only

  • No one can see data from data source 2 because dataset B doesn’t belong to any security groups

  • User 4 cannot see any data at all because security group T has no datasets

If you move data source 1 to dataset C:

  • User 1 can still see data from that source

  • User 2 cannot now see data from that source

  • User 5 can now see data from that source

So, moving a data source to a different dataset has implications on security.
